Preservation School –– Art Deco in the Bronx
Join John Howard of Bronx Art Deco Apartment House Archive (BADAHA) for this exploration into Art Deco in the Bronx. In this class, you learn about the Art Deco style, its place in the development of modernism, and its period of influence from 1925 to 1941. John leads the class through his website and showcases seven Art Deco types found in the Bronx, each type illustrated by a single building from the archive that displays the distinct qualities of the category. Participants learn about the landmarked, at-risk, and lost Deco buildings in the Bronx. In the process, you also learn how to navigate the website and discover the different types and sources of its information.

I bought a condo when the parkchester south was converted in the 1980s, still own it. I met with sales rep to pick up $50 prospectus, who said l wouldn't get a mortgage based on income, l said to her "watch me"...changed job to get higher income, did not have a credit card yet, (l was 26 years old) went to the lender bank, who advised get a credit card, rent to own etc., l received a 15 year mortgage, paid it off in 10 years.

Thank you for the excellent and informative presentation. I learned a lot! I have a quick question about the presence of African American women in Brooklyn Heights. If I understood correctly, you mentioned that the area nurtured women of all backgrounds. However, it seems that the African American women you referred to did not grow up or primarily live in Brooklyn Heights, which has historically been a predominantly white, upper-class neighborhood. Could you please clarify this point? Thanks again

Thank you Michelle! This was so well presented. It would have been nice to see some of the old Owl Eye LIRR trains ascending from the tunnel. The Sinclair garage had an upstairs shop area where we used to go on a rainy day for woodshop. An after school program run by John Duda and George Ashlander would pick us up after school on Waverly Ave. in Clinton Hill. Bishop Loughlin and Queen of All Saints on Lafayette Ave., as well as the Clinton Hill post-war apartments ($65.00 per-month) was our residence. St. Joseph Church is on Pacific St. Nicely Done - Thank you so much!

I visited the hotel shortly before it closed for renovations (now it is owned by a shell company of the Chinese Communist Party), and I was totally disappointed at how cheap it looked. Fake dropped ceilings with off-the-shelf sunken lights, lowered ceilings in the rooms too. Cheap wall to wall carpeting. Even the bathroom fixtures shown here in the vid are something you find in any department store. You could only see traces here and the of its glorious past. For example the nice metallic engravings on the elevator doors. Will have to see how it looks now, after these latest renovations.

the positive: The content of the presentation was lovely and definitely raised my interest in SI. Would love to go on a walking tour sometime. the negative: Uh..um..uh..uh... Large parts of the presentation was awful to listen to. It was "uh" and "um" with a few words in between. Not everyone is eloquent on the fly, or at all, and that's okay, but the speaker ought to prepare for that by having a scripted presentation (text) to read from.

the destruction of Penn station was unfortunate, it was not a case of it outliving it’s usefullness. New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority is in a heap of financial trouble. It is more than $40 billion in debt; it has a $60 billion maintenance backlog; plus it has more than $20 billion in unfunded health care obligations. Maintenance backlogs are harder to find as government agencies don’t want to admit they’ve been neglecting their physical infrastructure. The bottom line is that rail transit is extremely expensive and the city should have replaced the subway with rubber tire metro years ago. Rebuilding Penn Station by would cost $3.5 billion, Money New York doesn’t have. And projects built by government Always go over budget

It was very fantastic that he did his Homeowner of their their history on the Bronx and many of people that have wild life at the beginning of a rebuilding of well families children loved ones friends and neighbors cousins and uncles and nephews but time over past that move on to the to the Bronx and sometimes that it cannot be hold it that long and time move on and it was a very difficult times that well the 70s 80s and the 90s it was the worst time ever in that time of year but have a wine need to know that it is sometimes that I have a history that to the Bronx that cannot be forgotten that history have had to be recorded that pictures or Mathway fade away but everyone had already done their homework already it's just like starving some pauses that from the blank history and history is always to have Santa is unique and sometimes that the Bronx always to have a surprises that many people that they did not know and specially that the Bronx always will have a a neighborhood it was at Suburban neighborhoods communities towns before like taller buildings concrete High skyscrapers and many different appointments but you know that some neighborhood stata the Bronx of three floors just a lie but sometimes survival had to be the stronger and sometimes that I could be like a Band-Aid forgotten or anything else like that it's just like history is fading away from the Bronx sometimes. And well two City Halls and other people that are they just don't know about it but I Bronx and sometimes that it was very hard to say this a challenging all these years but everyone had to be working together or not everyone just going to be forgotten about it in the future to the Bronx and the Bronx always to have a different neighborhood styles from different language
